How to protect your home before the storm hits?

The best insurance is prevention. A little maintenance can go a long way and it may help avoid claims or coverage issues. Some preventative measures may also add additional home insurance discounts.

Home Maintenance Tips

  • Clean gutters & downspouts before heavy rain
  • Trim trees around your property
  • Secure outdoor furniture and patio items
  • Check your roof, shingles, and flashing for wear or debros build up
  • Consider Installing a Backwater Valve to prevent sewer and drainage backups
  • Install or maintain Sump Pump and have a backup power source
  • Add Water Leak Sensors to water damage prone areas like floor drains, bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry room.

Prevent Interior Damage

  • Seal windows & doors
  • Add weatherstripping and check caulking
  • Move valuables off basement floors

Power & Emergency Prep

  • Have backup power for essential electronics (pumps, basement sensors, phones)
  • Prepare an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, and essentials

Does Your Home Insurance Cover Wind and Flood Damage?

Storm season in BC brings strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rising water levels and one of the most common questions we hear is:
“Am I covered for wind and flood damage?” A quick policy review can help you stay protected before a storm ever arrives.

What’s Typically Covered

Most home insurance policies in BC include coverage for sudden and accidental storm related damage, such as:

  • Wind Damage to your roof, siding, windows, and exterior structures
  • Trees or branches falling onto your home
  • Water entering your home due to wind or other storm related perils (e.g., roof blown off, broken window)
  • Damage to personal belongings caused by wind-related events

What’s Not Automatically Covered But May Be Added to your Policy

Flood damage (Ais not always included
in standard home policies.

You may need add-on coverage for:

  • Overland water — water entering from overflowing rivers, lakes, ditches, or rainfall surface runoff
  • Sewer backup — when drains, sewer, and septic systems back up into your home
  • Ground water — suddent seepage through basement walls, floorts, and foundations floor from underground water

Without these optional protections, flood damage may not be covered — even if caused by a storm.
